What is an Agile Release Train?

An Agile Release Train (ART) is a team consisting of multiple agile teams all focused on a common goal. An ART might include five to twelve self-organized teams (50-125 people total) working together to plan, define, and execute a project.

All ARTs are organized around a company’s main development streams and aim to deliver a continuous flow of value. It achieves this by providing synchronization at the program level. This means all ART teams have common start and end dates for their iterations, which are up to five times longer than traditional ones. In doing so, they follow joint milestones for what is typically a 10-week cycle.

An Agile Release Train, of course, follows the principles of agile project management.
