What is data residency?

Data residency refers to the geographic location of an organization’s data. It is an important concept in the context of Cloud computing because it takes into account the applicable data laws and regulatory requirements that apply to where data resides. When organizations use Cloud services, they may store their data in the country where the data originates or outside its borders. However, it is important to note that Cloud providers operate their Data Centers in various locations around the world, and therefore it can be difficult for users to determine the exact location of their data. That’s why it’s significant for Cloud users to carefully research their Cloud provider’s data residency policies and design their Service Level Agreements (SLAs) accordingly to ensure they comply with applicable data laws and regulatory requirements.
